       Connect the World
      Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them everywhere. They connect people to their work place. In the United States today,laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
     Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program allowing students to study schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the ] 5OO students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are a part of a $10million computer program at Westlake. Students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to "speak"  with their teachers,classmates, or families. However, the most important part of the program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it anywhere they like!
     Because of the many changes in computer technology,laptop use in higher education is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers.  In addition, portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students.
     At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff uses the computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,"Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and
do everything."

    筆記本電腦在全世界都很流行。人們可以隨處使用它。它們將人和工作地點連接到一起。今天在美國，筆記本甚至可以將學生和教室連接起來。
    弗吉尼亞州的韋斯特萊克大學將要開始一項筆記本電腦計劃，讓學生能夠在任意地方學習。五年之內，學校將有1500名學生每人得到一部筆記本電腦。這些電腦是韋斯特萊克大學斥資一千萬美元實施的電腦計劃的一部分。得到筆記本電腦的同學將有權使用互聯網。  另外，他們還能通過電子郵件同老師、同學甚至家人進行“交談”。但是，該計劃最重要的部分就是：學生不用去機房就能用上電腦。他們可以在自己喜歡的任何地方使用它!
    電腦科技的變化發展使得筆記本電腦在高等教育中的應用成為可能。筆記本的功能變得很強大，幾乎和臺式機無異。而且，便攜式電腦不僅能上網，還可以把學生同圖書館等其它資源聯系到一起。一些國家高等教育官員正在研究如何使用筆記本電腦幫助學生學習。
    在韋斯特萊克大學，60％以上的教職員工使用電腦。筆記本電腦使得所有教師在教學中使用電腦成為可能。就像一名韋斯特萊克的老師說的：“我們位于弗吉尼亞的中心。我們為學生打開一扇面向世界的窗子。他們能看到一切，做到一切。”
